The first time we saw the all-new Land Rover Discovery was when we had an exclusive photo-shoot for it with Al Fardan ahead of Qatar Motor Show 2017 , this time we took our test drive to a different level than we do normally in our test drives as we took the Land Rover Discovery to “Sealine” the big desert in Qatar to see how the car would function in such dunes.
Just Before We Hit The Dunes
Through Thursday night we tested the discovery in terms of being comfortable in driving specially in busy roads as you may notice from the first look that the discovery is tall! and somehow big yet when sitting in it it give you a really nice space too as you would believe being big would mean less comfortable while braking or going through bumpy roads.
The Discovery’s electronic air suspension system would make all of this hassle go away as you steer it without the jerk feeling of a big SUV you usually might feel.
Let’s show you couple of features before we hit the dunes and talk more about the exterior /interior design
The all-new Discovery exterior was changed from the wheels up to match the modern style Land Rover always followed and now looks more like a family oriented SUV that comes with a 7-seater with a big cargo if needed too.
The interior comes with no doubt from the finest material as using premium leather, authentic wood and metal finish to give you the luxury you need, after all you are buying a Land Rover brand!
The Discovery comes with a panoramic roof so big that you think the car is a cabriolet, event the 3rd row seats would enjot the view up and even letting the light reaches out with the ability of course to put the shades on.
With the 7-Seater on, comes the ease of mind as you can control folding them up or down with a touch of a button from the back or simply by controlling it from the main console.
One thing about the interior design that really impressed us was the amount of storage boxes in the car like literally everywhere you turn your head or put your hand there is a storage sometimes a storage inside a storage! That’s a big plus for the car for a family.
The Other Side of the Discovery
Le’ts talk more about our experience in the desert. The all-new Discovery for someone who see it from the outside will say ” No, this is just a nice family car, I can’t go for an off-road trip with it!” Well whoever you are, you are wrong sir!
Qatar Dunes considered one of the toughest yet beautiful dunes in the GCC area where you can test the capability of any car as the sane there is too soft which makes it difficult for cars to drive on and usually gets stuck easily.
Thanks to the new shape of the Discovery and the new aluminum monocoque body the total weight of the Discovery was reduced by 480KG from its previous generation! Yes that’s a lot in automotive industry, usually in a sport car when the weight is reduced by 100KG we start a party! so imagine almost half a ton!
The 3.0 L Si6 Engine produces 340PS and and 450Nm of Torque! well in numbers the car is quite good then but how about the real action?
First we have to reduce the tires pressure to make the tires run flat on the sun so we reduced the tires first to 15Psi which was perfect. Coming inside Sealine you either take the hard way or the easy way, for our first time to test such vehicle in the desert we had to go for … the hard way indeed! Once you enter after the first resort you go straight for a 45-47 degrees dune that most of the low power cars would get stuck easily there easily, but putting the car in Desert Terrain mode and High transmission mode things went smooth and even climb it on 3rd gear!
Our whole trip was always on H4 gear and we only used the low gear once when we got stuck for a bit in one of really bad spots in the desert but putting the low gear in the car helped and we carried on.
We were 4 people during our test with an average of 80KG per person which I would say a normal family would weighs the same but that did not prevent us from a smooth ride all over the desert.
The electronic air suspension system really helped a lot as the ground clearance after you raise the car is really high, yet the car is stable and can go up and down the dunes easily and again it is super light.
We never had an idea the new discovery has this in it in terms of performance. high five for the engineers for this!
There is More
We need another article to write about the technologies embedded in it so let’s see when we will have another spin in it.
